Hiring Steps Any candidate that submits an application to become a constable should expect the process to take between two to four months for completion. It is important throughout the process that all forms are completed by the candidate. Forms found to be have been completed by someone else may result in the applicant being removed from the process. Below are the steps that everyone is put through before being considered for employment: Step 1: Submission of resume and completed application form The applicant receives one of three letters:
Step 2: Background history and criminal record check The applicant is mailed two background forms that must be answered by the candidate, as well as consent forms allowing us to search national databases for any criminal activity. Step 3: References and personal credit report The applicants who are selected to move on to Step 3 must provide three references each for three categories (Personal, Education and Employer). The Employer references should all be from former or current supervisors who can best answer questions about everyday work habits. As well, the candidate must submit a personal credit report. These can be accessed from Equifax Canada or a similar company, found online at www.equifax.ca. Step 4: Background investigation The background investigator assigned to your file will conduct an interview with each of the references you provided. As well, your credit history and all answers you gave on previous documentation will be reviewed and scored. All criminal, local and driving checks will be done at this time. The background investigation can take anywhere from four to sixteen weeks. Step 5: Interview, testing and uniform measurement Selected candidates are invited to come in for an interview and testing day. The testing consists of the following five tests: MAB II (Verbal and Performance), Sigma Written Test, MMPI – II (psychological) and the 16 PF (psychological). The interview takes place with a minimum of two people on the panel. Applicants should arrive at NAPS Headquarters no more than 5-10 minutes before the scheduled time. Out of town applicants are invited to try on the uniform to determine measurements following the interview and test to minimize the number of trips to Thunder Bay. Step 6: Selected to attend the Basic Constable Intake Candidates are notified of their success and given a conditional offer of employment. Every candidate must still submit a medical release signed by a doctor attesting that they are healthy enough to attend the Ontario Police College and participate in all physical activities. Candidates must also make arrangements for the $7500 fee to be paid to NAPS prior to the beginning of the intake. |
